About CYE: City Youth Exposure (CYE) is a nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles, California that introduces youth to people, places and things that they would not normally or easily experience in their daily lives. The main focus of CYE is to enhance young lives through exposure, education, expression, and empowerment. Our mission is to provide diverse and unique experiences that educate and empower youth to seek the best in themselves and in life. We envision a future of giving thousands of youth hope and possibility to be greater people and pursue better lives.

CYE provides opportunities for youth to have experiences that allow them to:

  • Learn from positive and enriching experiences.
  • Open their eyes to new possibilities.
  • Be active in activities that are not available in their communities.
  • Express themselves through creative activities.
  • Receive guidance that helps them plan for their future and establish high standards and goals.
  • Develop a positive outlook on life.
  • Increase their hope for a promising future.
  • Recognize their personal value and develop a positive identity.

CYE is part of the Disciplined Respected Entrepreneurs Program (D.R.E.), an enterprise made up of the best and brightest college students and recent graduates specifically interested in business ownership and collective economics. Read more

City Youth Exposure Hosts Trip to the Mountainview Generating Station

City Youth Exposure (CYE) hosted its first trip to explore the Southern California Edison Mountainview Generating Station in Redlands, CA. On the morning of March 14, ten students in grades 7-8th from La Tijera K-8 School and chaperons headed to the first new major Los Angeles Basin power plant to be built in 30 years.

During their nearly 80 mile trip, the students were engaged in empowering conversations, discussing education, traveling, City Youth Exposure, and more. Upon arrival, the group assembled in the administration building for a presentation by the plant coordinator. The group learned about the history of the power plant, its efficiency, how it generates power,  how the plant is operated, and related careers. Because safety is the highest priority for SCE, the coordinator informed the group about employee and community safety and emphasized the importance of preparedness. The coordinator and plant manager educated the group about actions to take in the event of downed power lines, an earthquake, fire or flood.

Right before the tour, the group enjoyed a hardy and healthy lunch, which consisted of baked chicken, steamed vegetables, baked potato, green bean Almandine, salad, and small treats for dessert. The lunch was an option chosen by CYE staff to promote healthy eating for our youth and chaperons.

Following lunch, the group put on their safety goggles and protection hats for the tour. The 90 minute tour consisted of a walk through of the Control Room, Water World, Cooling Towers, and plant grounds to view power plant and equipment structures. View the video below to experience the trip yourself:

Power Plant Description:
Mountainview began commercial operation in 2005. It was the first new major Los Angeles Basin power plant to be built in 30 years. The plant’s “combined-cycle” design allows it to operate efficiently. The six Mountainview turbines can produce a kilowatt of electricity using less than 7,000 Btu of fuel, compared to older plants which require 10,000 Btu or more. http://www.edison.com/ourcompany/sce.asp?id=6754

The Walk for Change was a blast! In effort to raise diabetes awareness, encourage regular exercise & promote healthy living, the event included the Chairman’s Challenge, which was a one (1) hour walk throughout the UCLA campus & the Walk for Change, which was a two (2) lap walk around the track led by Jackie Joyner- Kersee at Drake Stadium.

We thank our volunteers and participants who come out to support the program in the Walk for Change. We especially thank Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Rafer Johnson and UCLA track & field staff for allowing CYE to be a part of the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational. You all make the CYE Walk for Change successful and a great experience. Click the photo to view the gallery.
